The fans of Chelsea have elected Didier Drogba the greatest player who has ever played for the Blues. Some other great Chelsea players were also nominated for this award, but, Drogba got the maximum number of votes by the fans and won the award. Drogba played for Chelsea for 8 years between 2004 and 2012. He played 226 matches for the Blues and scored a total of 100 goals. He played a major role in many memorable victories of Chelsea.
In the last season, Drogba’s performance was fantastic. Chelsea was the winner of the UEFA Champions League in the last season and Drogba was the stand out performer for the club in that tournament. In the final of the Champions League against Bayern Munich in the last season, Drogba scored the leveller for his team in the 88th minute of the match by capitalizing on a fine corner kick from Juan Mata. The game was extended for the next 30 minutes, but, neither of the two teams was able to score a goal in that extra time and the match went into the penalty shootouts. Chelsea won the penalty shootout. Drogba was the one who scored the winning penalty for the Blues.
Drogba’s contract with Chelsea expired at the end of the last season and the Ivorian striker decided to leave Chelsea. He signed for the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua. After being named as Chelsea’s greatest ever player, Drogba said, “It’s a great honour for me. Frankly speaking, I hadn’t expected to get the maximum no. of votes. The other nominated players were the great ones and I expected one of them to get this award. However, I want to thank all my fans for voting for me. Playing for Chelsea had been fantastic and I still miss those days.”
