Didier Drogba will need more game time in order to get back to his best, according to coachMauro Biello.
The Montréal Impact forward has struggled with injuries during the off-season. The first few matches of the 2016 campaign was set to be played on artificial pitches. The club decided that this was not exactly suitable for the former Ivory Coast international with his fragile knee. They were aware that the 37-year-old needed to be maintained in order to be at his best.Biello also admitted that it may take a few games before Drogba hits its peak.
The former Chelsea striker was a major factor in the club’s 2015 success. He scored a hat-trick in his debut game before going on into the campaign with 11 goals in as many matches. Even though Montréal Impact have made a great start even without him in the team, Biello will know that tougher matches will come in the future and Drogba’s presence will be important. The club won the first two matches of the 2016 campaign to top the table. Montreal are now the surprise leaders of the Eastern conference.Biello says that Drogba is not to be at his best in the first few matches since he has had only three weeks of training.
“It’s important for [Drogba] to get minutes. We’ll decide if he’ll start or come off the bench. He’s been working hard for this and he’s an important player for us. At some point [on Saturday] we’ll see him on the field. It’s normal that he’s not at 100 percent because he’s had just three weeks of training. He’s someone that brings a certain leadership to our group and presence to the field,” said the Montréal Impact coach about the availability of his best player without a shadow of doubt.
