Mauro Biello watched his team secure a comfortable 3-0 win over New York Red Bulls even when they were without star striker Didier Drogba in the squad.
The club took the decision of leaving out the striker for the first few matches of the season. Concerns about the toll that artificial pitches would take on Drogba’s knee proved an important reason in the former Chelsea striker missing the opening game against Vancouver Whitecaps. He was once again left out of the squad for the high-profile game against New York Red Bulls.
After a goalless first half, the home team took charge of the game in the final 30 minutes. Oduro came up with a goal just before the hour mark. Piatti provided a secure platform by doubling the advantage in the 71st minute. Jackson-Hamel’s injury time goal meant that there was a glossy look to the score.Biello said that Drogba is undoubtedly one of the biggest players in the MLS, but he was happy to see his team step up their game in order to compensate for the lack of Drogba. This second consecutive victory sees the club top the table quite comfortably.
Biello claimed that some of the players scoring in the 3-0 win was essential for their confidence. “That was good for (his) confidence. And that was an excellent ball from Harry Shipp. We got a big save by Evan Bush at a key moment, and we were able to create chances at big moments. We know what Didier brings, but players are stepping up and they’re showing we’re very capable,” said the Montréal Impact manager. The club are hoping to continue his winning run when they take on DC United in the next league match. There is a possibility that Drogba could feature in this game as a substitute.
